Huacaya Alpaca Research
Ron and Judi Allread discovered alpacas the fall of 2002 and immediately started researching all aspects of raising these gentle, inquisitive and hardy animals. Not just the care requirements, but the investment opportunity and what it would take to start a new life at a much slower pace than the metropolitan lifestyle they'd grown tired of. It took just one visit to a local alpaca breeder to convince them that this was what they wanted to do. The hardest decision to be made was whether to raise huacaya or suri or both!!
The huacaya fiber grows straight out, unlike the suri which grows in long silky tendrils, or dreadlocks. It was the "teddy-bear look" and perpetual smile of the huacaya that captured Ron and Judi's hearts!
10 Year Alpaca Farm Business Plan
After laying out a ten-year business plan they bought their first huacaya alpacas: two pregnant females with cria due that season, one maiden, who was Grand Champion Female at the 2003 Alpacapalooza Show, and a pet quality male, named "Jimmy".

Three Maidens
They bought the alpacas before they sold their Seattle home, and found a 10-acre piece of land with only a house on it in beautiful North Idaho. Their new farm was nestled between Spokane, Washington and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on the Rathdrum Prairie outside Post Falls. With a blank slate to work with, plans were quickly initiated to get a barn put up and fencing completed in anticipation of the 6 alpacas (two female cria had been born) arriving from Seattle. Their farm quickly grew to the current size with yet another cria due mid October.
Are they happy with their decision? The answer is YES! They wish they'd have done it 10 years sooner!
Huacaya Alpaca Farm Store
Although the original business plan didn't include an Alpaca Farm Store, they found the design of their new barn made a great place to give visitors a "hands-on" opportunity to see and feel what actually happens with 6-10 lbs of fiber per animal, shorn each year!
Show Quality Huacaya Alpacas
Serano takes great pride in their show quality animals, their care, and providing exceptional service. Although there are alpaca shows throughout the United States, Serano has shown their alpacas at the Heart of the Valley Show in Albany Oregon, Alpacapalooza in Puyallup Washington just south of Seattle, and Post Falls at the PNAA Showcase Show where they have competed with 200 to 400 other alpaca, and have placed ribbons in each of them.
